Many Airlines Go Into Vail Airport
Why drive to Vail, Colorado when you can fly and beat the traffic? The Eagle County
Airport (EGE 970.524.9490) is just a few minutes from Vail. Two major airlines have
service to EGE all year round: American and United. Continental, Delta, Northwest,
United Express and US Airways have service during the skiing season.
In addition, you
can schedule your primary flight to Denver and take a short hop from there to Vail. Other
destination cities are: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston, Los
Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Newark, Philadelphia and San Francisco.
EGE also has customs services for private aircraft and wireless Internet
EGE is a relatively large airport for the mountains, able to handle 747s. The terminal was
finished in 1996, so expect more than your typical shuttle flight services, including food,
souvenirs, ground transportation and rental cars. The parking is free in 7-, 10- and 30-day
lots. For parking longer than 30 days, arrangements can be made. The 7-day parking is
right across from the terminal.
Flight information is available at www.eaglecounty.us. As is to be expected, more flights
are available during the skiing season.
Shuttle services are available from both Denver International Airport (DIA) and EGE, so
if flying over mountains makes you more nervous that being driven in a nice van,
will do a comfortable, safe job of it.
So now you’re in Vail, brought to the door of your lodging and you’re ready to explore.
Do you need a rental car? Only if you need the autonomy and control that driving your
own wheels brings. Otherwise, why not use the free bus service in Vail and let someone
else worry about traffic, turnabouts, one-way streets, construction zones, where things are
and why that jerk is tailgating. You can just kick back and enjoy the scenery.
Other surrounding communities that have free bus service within their territory and to
area towns are Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Keystone.
If you end up in Aspen for some reason, free bus service is available there as well and
runs among the four ski areas: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk Mountain
and Snowmass.
Getting stranded in the major ski areas of Colorado is next to impossible. If nothing else,
a phone call will bring someone to take you where you want to go. Try calling the Vail
Community Information line at 970.479.2115 for help. If they can’t help, they know
someone who can.
Traveling to Vail is one of the simpler undertakings in the world of transportation. All the
right things have been done and developed to make the movement as easy as possible, not only
to Vail but within the ski areas once you get there. Imagine getting a ride to your local
airport and never having to drive again until you return home. What more relaxing thing
could there be? Oh, I know some of you want to drive.
It’s in your blood, and truth be told,
I am often like that too. However, if I get the choice to be chauffeured around town, I’ll
take it. That way I don’t spend half my vacation time trying to find where I want to go and
turning around frequently, or ending up way out in some desolate place without a map or a
clue as to which way is which.
You really don’t want to start out for a restaurant and end
up in Denver, do you? Not that I have ever done this or will admit to it, but it took some
