Origins of Downhill Skiing
Have you ever wondered where skiing originated? Skiing is a popular sport enjoyed the world over. Many believe that humans first enjoyed skiing more than 5,000 years ago. There is evidence wooden skis existed in Norway and Sweden at least two to five thousand years ago. Prior to this, some have postulated that humans used to strap the bones of animals to their boots to help them glide across the snow in a "ski like" fashion.
Before using skis for sport, skis were used in combat. Military companies used mini skis to help negotiate snow covered territory. This was particularly common in Norway and Sweden during the mid to late 1700s.
It wasn't until the mid 1800s that skiing became more popular. During this time a Norwegian inventor created the first stiff bindings to provide would be skiers with more control. The rests as they say, is history when it comes to skiing.
Traditional Forms of Skiing
Today many a full color brochure or flyer printing has touted the benefits of skiing. Not only is skiing a healthy and popular sport, but it is also one that affords its fans many alternatives.
If for example, you are not a fan of traditional skiing, you can still hit the slopes to enjoy snowboarding, snowshoeing and even bobsledding and other cold weather adventures. Skiing enthusiasts however, often enjoy the traditional appeal of skiing including the technical expertise required to ski well on some of the most complicated slopes.
Today skiing is one of the more popular winter sports enjoyed by young and old alike. As an Olympic sport skiing often attracts fans the world over. Skiing first became popular during the Winter Olympic Games held in the mid 1900s. Today it remains one of the more competitive sports at not only the Winter Olympics but also at various other winter games.
