How Good is the Vail School District?
Now you did it. You up and visited Vail, Colorado and fell in love. You fell in love with
the skiing, with the mountains, with the creek. You came back in the summer and fell in
love with the golf courses, the wildflowers, with the mountains, and yet once again, with
the creek. The pangs of longing that you feel after leaving Vail nag at your soul.
You need to live in Vail, Colorado or your life will forever be barren and incomplete, lacking
any excitement except when you contemplate returning to Vail.Up here we call that flatlander mountain fever. Those of us who have relocated from other states, Minnesota in my case, know exactly what you are going through. We had a
little hill that we called Lookout Mountain up there in the frozen tundra land. Yeah, that
was about as close to a real mountain as a house cat is close to a puma.
Anyway, I think you ought to take the plunge, but before you do, consider the Vail school districts and
how much they offer your children. First off, you will be living in Eagle County. The school districts are separated into K-5,
middle and high, a common way of structuring education in Colorado.
The Red
Sandstone Elementary school (970.328.2910) covers K-5 grades and provides several
special programs to make sure your child receives the support needed to move ahead. The
programs include special reading/writing/math attention, extended kindergarten, English
as a second language, special art for those children demonstrating aptitude in the fine arts,
a school newspaper and a media/computer lab. For middle school, your children will need to go outside of Vail to the Berry Creek
Middle School (970.328.2960) in Edwards, Colorado. The teacher-to-student ratio is
1:18. The high school will be Battle Mountain High School (970.328.2930) in Minturn,
Colorado, with a 1:17 teacher-to-student ratio.
For private school, the Vail Mountain School (970.476.3850) is, as the name implies,
right in Vail and covers K-12 grades. The teacher-to-student ratio is 1:10, and the
admission policy includes student achievement, interest and fit into a cross-grade learning
environment. If a Christian private school is desirable, check into the Vail Christian High
School (970.926.3015). This school covers the grades 9-12 and is located in Edwards,
Colorado.
After graduation from high school, many young adults prefer to attend a local community
college for the first two years before transferring to a four-year institute to finish the
undergraduate work. The Colorado Mountain College (970.569.2900), with facilities
close to Vail (Eagle, Gypsum and Avon), is perfect for starting the journey into higher
education. Traditional associate degree programs are offered, which transfer easily to
four-year institutes, along with developmental programs that prepare young adults for the
rigors of the paper chase in higher education.
But what if your now grown-up child doesn’t want to pursue a bachelor’s degree? The
Colorado Mountain College also offers career training degrees and certificates to help
young adults to enter the work world with specific skills for specific careers. Come to
think of it, adults could take advantage of these programs to switch from a dying career to
an exciting new one.
